Phillip Island House 1

Located near the town of Woolamai Beach on Phillip Island. This is a flat site with a tight budget while distant views were to be had toward the west side of the island. Our client was open to ideas and was keen that the house felt ‘like a beach house’. Phillip Island is home to a type of beach house which contains a garage and laundry on the ground floor and living areas on the first floor – the ground floor was often enclosed as the house changed occupants and needs changed.

We took this idea as the starting point for the project. The final design provides a garage area capable of being open or closed, doubling as a rumpus room when the boat is removed. A small living area overlooks the rumpus space with two bedrooms located close by – a form of kids retreat.

The house opens up to enable natural cooling via cross ventilating breezes which tend to come in from the south east during summer. Decks on the north and south sides of the house offer extended outdoor living spaces dependent upon the prevailing wind.

Materials chosen reflect the character of the adjoining houses, fibre cement, polycarbonate wall sheets, timber boards and corrugated steel.
